London bike SuperHighWays for 2016

Yesterday that being 7 Mar 2013, London's Mayor Boris Johnson  says his new plan for cycling in London will make the capital the most attractive city to cycle in for everybody.

Back in May 2009 London's Mayor Boris Johnson had what could be perceived as a near death experience with a lorry, the whole thing was captured on local CCTV.  The Footage shows how Boris Johnson and his colleagues are lucky to be alive.

One of Boris Johnson's missions as Mayor of London is to get more people out of their cars and on to their bikes, but anyone who watches this CCTV footage of the mayor out on his own bike, could very likely be put off for life.  On that Friday morning Johnson headed out in London with transport minister Lord Adonis and Kulveer Ranger, his director of transport, to look at potential sites for new cycle "super highways". The routes are part of his plan for a "cycling revolution" in the capital.  The mayor peddled Round a corner with the minister, enjoying the ride, until a large lorry overtook them.  Somebody from up above must have been looking out for them that day!

From the footage it seems the lorry was driving way to fast for this road anyway, and as the lorry goes over the speed humps the lorrys back door then suddenly flew open hooked and dragged a parked car into the street and smashed into another just feet from Johnson, Adonis and Ranger,  lucky lucky boys!

Johnson and his colleagues and other cyclists were hidden from the CCTV camera during the incident by the lorry, a few seconds later a figure that is unmistakably Johnson emerges, helmet in hand, scratching his head and lucky to be alive.  That must have shook the gajeebers out  of all those concerned that day, but I'm guessing that it makes his case even more personal for  his superhighways, what do you think ?  Post your comments below or tweet it at twitter.com/@UkSaferCycling.

I think here in the UK cyclists are not taken seriously by other road users because some of them do not adhere to traffic signals and jump lights etc. This makes motorists think the worse of cyclists in general. I wonder if cycle training like that available to children and young people would help. Maybe you could then wear a special vizivest with a logo on showing that you are a cyclist who takes their own safety seriously and has taken a course in road rules. As motorists take their tests and undergo courses to save themselves getting extra points on their licences, cycle safety should form part of this and videos shown on what can happen to a cyclist when a driver has not seen them.
